Croatia Pula Travel Tourism Guide - Pula is the largest city in Istria and it is on the southern tip of the peninsula. Pula has a population of sixty two thousand and the main occupations of the inhabitants are wine marking, fishing, shipbuilding, and tourism. Pula has been the administrative centre of Istria since the Roman times.

There are many surviving Roman buildings such as the first century roman amphitheatre, which is the sixth largest in the world and it is called the Arena. It is still used for film festivals. Other important structures are the first century triumph arch and the temple of Rome and Augustus. The town contains many renaissance and medieval buildings.

The Illyrians lived here in the tenth century BC and then the Romans created the settlement of Colonia Pietus Iulia Pola. The Slavs settled here in the seventh century and then the Venetians took over in 1150. After that, Pula became part of the Habsburg monarchy, then in 1813 part of the Austrian empire until 1918 when Italy took over and then became included in the Croatian lands.

From the nineteenth century to the end of world war one, the city was the headquarters of the Austro-Hungarian navy. The first recorded tourist excursions to Pula were in the nineteenth century. A man called Giovanni Carrara organised guided tours for distinguished people in 1828. The first tourist guidebook was published in 1845 and the first public beach was opened. In 1985, the first modern hotel was built.
The city lies at the end of seven hills where the local soil is red and pine forests. The National park of Brijum is nearby. The local are provides great diving opportunities that include Roman galleys and WW1 warships. Dinosaur footprints are visible on nearby shores. There are several walking routes available around the city and numbered cycling routes. There is an aquarium inside the one hundred and eighteen years old Austro-Hungarian fortress where you can have direct contact with some of the fish in an open tank. The Croatian Film Festival is held here every year.

Jenny,

Yes it is possible to travel from Pula to Venice, you can use this website to search for exact times and costs, please consider that the trip each way takes 3 hours, so it won't give you a lot of time in Venice if you plan on doing it as a day trip.

Note that Pula in Itialian is Pola.

David

PS. Please don’t forget to send in your photos of Croatia to PhotoCroatia, I would love to display them

Hi

I plan to take boat trips and ferries from Split via Hvar and up to the north. Jadrolinija travels with ferries and catamarans along the coast line and locally between most of the islands as far as I can understand out of their internet pages. But they all ends up in Rieka?

What company - or is there - a connection with boat from the islands in the north ( Cres etc) to Pula ?

Timeline is beginning to the mid of August

Regards Nils
