Croatia Rovinj Travel Tourism Guide - Rovinj is Located on the Western end of the Istrian Peninsula, this small seaport town is a feature of Croatia's Adriatic coast. Rovinj is less than sixty miles South of Trieste, Italy.

Rovinj is a small town, with less than fifteen thousand year round residents. Due to it's proximity to the Italian Panhandle, which spreads across the Northern shore of the Adriatic, a large segment of the Rovinj population base is Italian. So much so, that the city is officially bilingual (Croatian and Italian).
In addition, Istriot, an ancient language dating back to the Romance era is still spoken in some Rovinj communities.

The primary industry of Rovinj, besides tourism, is fishing. Easy access to the Adriatic and Mediterranean, sheltered harbors, and a proximity to the fish hungry markets of Western Europe make this a natural fishing center.

It is also a natural seaport, with births for a variety of vessels. Even though it is a small town, Rovinj has two births large enough for ocean spanning freight and passenger ships.
For the tourist, there is more than just the city proper to enjoy. Several islands off the coast of Rovinj offer beautiful beaches and lush landscapes. The Island of Crveni otok (or Red Island in Croatian) is also known as 'Flower Island' for it's startling and lush plant life.

Rovinj has long been a place of romance and mystery on the Adriatic Sea. Novelist Jules Verne used this fishing town as a backdrop of one of his novels, 'Mathias Sandorf'.
Like many other Istrian cities, Rovinj was an active center in the ancient Roman Empire, settled as early as the third century AD.
