Croatia Umag Travel Tourism Guide - In Roman times, Umag was otherwise known as Umacus. The town was first mentioned in the seventh century. Umag is full of old character with its narrow, winding streets and a medieval urban structure. There are many picturesque squares too. Some of the tenth century town wall stills stand and also the fourteenth century towers. The parish church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and St Peregrine is decorated in the Baroque style and dates from 1730. Inside is a fifteenth century Gothic polyptych. The church of St Roche was built after the plague epidemics of 1507 and it contains a wooden ceiling painted in oil that dates from the eighteenth century.

Umag is a well known seaside resort and a popular Riviera. The Riviera itself is 45 kilometers long. The town offers something for everyone such as swimming pools and casinos. Umag is situated on the north-western coast of Istria and it is thirteen kilometers northwest of Buje. The core of the old town is situated on a peninsula that was once an island, which is situated between two bays. The Croatian Open Umag, International Tennis Championship of Croatia is held here every year.
The first hotel in Umag was mentioned in the year 1896 and it was called the Albergo all’Istria. There is a modern art gallery in the town called the Dante Gallery and the town museum is housed inside an old defense tower. Nearby in the Buje region there are plenty of walking paths and 12 cycling routes to choose from. There are also several hunting reserves in the region where you can go for animals such as hares and deer. The population of Umag is 7,000 and many of the inhabitants work in the tourist industry and grow grapes and olive. There is a large successful winemaking industry here in Umag.
