Croatia Brijuni National Park Travel Tourism Guide - The warm Mediterranean climate with sunny sky’s beaming down on the vegetation and famous attractions has a person wondering what to do next. The animal life along with the safari park and zoo leaves you feeling warm and happy. The many historical structures leave you with a feel for the culture that surrounds the islands.

Located south-west of Istria and considered to be the largest peninsula of Croatia. You can take a boat from Fazana port to Brijuni. Fourteen islands and islets make up the Brijuni islands. The biggest islands are Mali Brijun and Veliki Brijun. The national park also has islands called Gaz, Supin, Saint Mark, Okrugljak, Vanga, Supinic, Pusti, Grunj, Saint Jerome, Kozada and Vrsar.

The lovely meadows and forests are abundant all over the islands. Erotic animals roam freely on the island of Veliki and it also has a tree of over sixteen thousands years old, which is an olive tree. The islands were at on time a holiday retreat for wealthy Austro- Hungarian elite.

The varieties of plants and animal life in the park have made the island a get away for nature and history seekers. The park was proclaimed a national park in 1983. You will see a museum, safari park, flower gardens and sculptures that make this park island so spectacular. The warm Mediterranean climate with an abundant of sun and rich vegetation makes the islands a wonderful place for tourism.
The Brijuni Islands had some Roman settlements, in the late 19th century the islands were used for their quarries, which have been worked in for centuries. The islands were dominated by Venice from the middle ages, and stone from the islands was used to build the palaces and bridges of the city.

The islands became part of the Austrian Empire in 1815, which later became Austria-Hungary. During this period the island quarries supplied stone to Vienna and Berlin. With the building of a naval base in the harbor of Pula, the Austrians built a strong fortress on Brioni Island.

In 1918 after WWI Brijuni was part of Italy and was separated from its Austrian heritage. Karl Kupelwieser, who was the son of the founder of the estate tried to maintain the former care but after the economic crisis following Black Friday, the estate went bankrupt and Karl committed suicide. In 1930 the islands were acquired by the Italians.

In 1945 after WWII Brijuni becomes part of the Yugoslavia. The communist state leader Josip Tito made Brijuni Islands his personal summer place. Slovene architect José Plecnik designed a pavilion for Tito. Almost 100 foreign heads of state visited Tito on his island, along with film stars including Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren, Carlo Ponte, and Gina Lollobrigida. Tito died in 1980, and by 1983 the islands were declared a National Park of Yugoslavia.
