Croatia Kornati National Park Travel Tourism Guide - The Kornati Islands is the largest and densest archipelago in Dalmatia and the Adriatic Sea. There are a total of 89 islands, islets and reefs. The collection is named after Kornat, the biggest island. Pliny called them Cratea and George Bernard Shaw fell in love with these islands too. The Kornati Islands became a National Park in 1980 and has an area of 234 sq kilometers.

The land areas of the National park consist of typical karst terrain, made up of carbonate rocks, which are mainly limestone. This karst phenomena comprises of depressions in the ground, grottoes, sinkholes, cracks, cavities and other eroded forms of rock. These islands became separated from the mainland when the sea levels rose after the melting of ice. The islands are also famous for the cliffs or “crowns”; the highest is on Klobucar at 80 meters. There are no natural sources of water on the Kornati Islands so rainwater is collected in cisterns.

Kornati used to be covered in Holm-oak trees but pirates, fishermen and farmers, torched these leaving behind sparse vegetation. The plant life in the Kornati National Park now comprises of tough resistant vegetation, and sage and feather grass. Sheep farming used to be popular on these islands but is now dying out. The only wild animal on Kornat and Dugi Otok is the beech martin or beach creature.

These islands were populated as early as in the Neolithic times. The last permanent habitation was during the 18th Century. The Kornati Islands used to be owned by Zadar. The oldest archaeological remains consist of Illynan settlements and stone grave mounds. There are also Roman remains on Toreta hill and at the foot of the hill is an early Christian church. On the islet of Panitula there is a medieval tower and a 16th Century church on Jadra Island.

Olives, figs, vines and citrus fruit are cultivated on the islands. Kornati is also very popular for fishing as it is one of the richest fishing grounds in the Adriatic Sea particularly for the benthos species.

Kornati Islands is a great place for keen boaters or to go yachting. There is a marina on Piskera. Underwater there is rich biocensis and magnificent geomorphology that attracts divers every year.

There are eight hiking trails – Planinarski put “Kornati” which lead to viewpoints where you can look out over the beautiful scenery of Kornati. You do need to purchase an entrance ticket to visit the Kornati National park.

You can either visit the islands on a day excursion from Zadar, Sibenik or Split, or alternatively stay in one of the cottages and follow a modern day Robinson Crusoe experience.
