Croatia Mljet National Park Travel Tourism Guide - Mljet is an elongated island in the Adriatic Sea and is also known as the Green Island. The Mljet National Park covers the northwestern part of the island and is 30 square kilometers large protecting both land and sea. It was proclaimed as a national park on the 11th of November 1960. It was the first institutionalized attempt at protecting an original ecosystem within the Adriatic Sea. Mljet was said to be the holiday destination of Ulysses.

There are two saltwater lakes, Veliko and Malo Jezoro, which have unique geological and oceanographic phenomena. These lakes originated about 10,000 years ago and at one point used to be of freshwater until the Christian era. Wood surrounds the lake right up to the water’s edge. The Isle of St Mary in the Great Lake has a mid twelfth century Benedictine monastery and a twelfth century church that closed in 1809.

Polace is a site with remains of a Roman palace that had fortifications and a Christian basilica. The Illirian tribes and then the Roman Empire were the first inhabitants of this area. The Croats have inhabited the central part of the island since the eighteenth century.

The park has reefs, islands, cliffs and ancient stone villages. There are “garmas” or collapsed caves on the southern side of the island. There are typical karst features as well. Another interesting feature is Mljet’s “blatine” which is a rare occurrence of brackish lakes that come and go. Some endemic Dalmatian plants can be seen on the rocky coastline of the island.
The island has five types of forest including the Holm Oak, which can be found mainly in the Great Valley. A big forest fire destroyed much of the old forest in 1917. There are no poisonous snakes on the island thanks to the Indian Mongoose, and there is only 5 species of snakes and 5 species of lizards. You may lucky enough to glimpse a sighting of the Snake eagle and there is wild bear in the national park. The Mediterranean Seal used to visit the seas here and conservationists are hoping it will return.

Today’s population of the island work in agriculture, growing grapes and olives, and tourism. They are the only Croatian islanders that can speak the ‘ijekavian’ dialect. You can reach the island by ferry from Dubrovnik and you will need to buy an entrance ticket to enter the national park.
