Croatia Paklenica National Park Travel Tourism Guide - The national park is 96 square kilometers and extends from the eastern coast of the Adriatic to the highest peaks of the Velebit Mountains. The two highest peaks in the park are Vaganski Vrh at 1757 meters and Svero Brdo 1753 meters. Paklenica National Park was designated in 1949 and is part of the Starigrad-Paklenica and Seline region, which has been habited continuously since the prehistoric times.

The park has 70 caves, of which Manita Pec is open for viewing. Manica Pec Cave has two halls full of stalactites, stalagmites and columns, which are 80,000 years old.

There is two canyons Velika Paklenica (14 km long) and Marla Paklenica (12 km long) which both have creeks which erode the limestone walls and cause the canyons to deepen each year. Velika Paklenica Canyon has underground tunnels dug into the cliffs by the Yugoslav Army that cover 1730 square kilometers and were intended as a shelter for the state and military leaders of that time. There are seven early nineteenth century watermills that were built on the Velika Paklenica Creek. The mills are open to the public.
There is 800 species of flora in the park and 40 are endemic. The Sandwort only grows in the creeks. There are Black Pine forests here and some of the trees in the park are dwarfed. Watch out for some of the 82 species of butterfly which includes the pretty Apollo; and there is 31 species of amphibians and reptiles of which 12 are snakes. There is 97 types of birds, keep a look out for the rare Griffon Vulture. Chamois, boar and the brown bear are some of the 47 species of mammals living within the park’s boundaries.

There is over 150 kilometers of hiking trails throughout the national park and the most popular trail is the one that runs through the Velika Paklenica Canyon to the Paklenica Mountain Hut. You can purchase hiking maps for the area. There are guided bird watching tours available and you may go mountain biking on the local trails. If you are into rock climbing, there are approximately 400 climbing routes available.

There is a Presentation Center with exhibitions about the flora, fauna, geology and geomorphy of the park. You can camp at the Presentation Center. You will need to buy an entrance ticket to visit the national park.
