Croatia Risnjak National Park Travel Tourism Guide - The park is part of the Dinaric mountain range and is in the region of Gorski Kotar, which is well known as the Croatian Switzerland, or the green lungs of Croatia as the area has extensive tree coverage. The National Park covers 63.5 square kilometers.

The Risnjak National Park was started in 1953 at the suggestion of the botanist Professor Doctor Ivo Horvat who had studied the local flora and karst formations. The park is named after the lynx, which is known as “ris” in Croatian.

The massif is made up of limestone and has the typical karst morphology of this area. The whole terrain except the mountain peaks is wooded and is characteristic of the Risnjak landscape. Many of the streams drop into the karst formations and continue underground.

The main peak is Risnjak at 1,528 meters, which has excellent views of the Bay of Kvarner from the summit. This park has varied climatic influences, which explains the type of flora in this area. There are over 4000 different plants in the park that include some rare species such as edelweiss and the black vanilla orchid. The animals in the park comprise of over 100 brown bears, lynx, chamois, deer, wild bear, wolves and wild cats. The forest is predominantly beech and fir. There are 51 species of native birds including 8 birds of prey and approximately 500 species of butterfly.
The Risnjak National Park is popular with tourists for winter sports, mountaineering, hunting and fishing, as it is only 1 hour’s drive from Zagreb and fifteen kilometers away from the Rijeka to Zagreb highway. You need to buy an entrance ticket to enter the National Park. At the Risnjak mountain lodge there is snow that lies on the ground for five months.

The source of the river Kupa is well worth a visit as it an important hydro-geological feature. It is an oval pond that is drawn underneath vertical rocks and the water springs out of 2 different channels. The pond is of a green blue color and is the deepest and widest source in Croatia. The river Kupa is popular for fishing and has brown trout and grayling.

You can follow the educational path Leska through the National Park that looks at the different vegetation and passes a variety of karst formations. It is a circular walk of 4.5 kilometers.
