Croatia Velebit National Park Travel Tourism Guide - Velebit is a part of the Dinaric Alps and is the longest mountain range in Croatia. Velebit became part of the international network of Biosphere Reserves, controlled by UNESCO, in 1978. Velebit is the youngest National Park within Croatia and covers 109km².

Velebit Mountain is Croatia’s holy mountain and is the home of Vila Velebita (the fairy of Velebit). This mythical mountain is a home of the Gods and is a symbol of Croatia as well as being part of the country’s national identity.

The first inhabitants of the Velebit region were the Illinan tribes, the Japods and the Liburns. They lived here from 2000BC up to the fifth century until Velebit became part of the Roman and Byzant Empire. During the seventh century Croats, who created the area’s first infrastructures, inhabited the area. The Turks conquered Velebit in the early sixteenth century and orthodox shepherds came to live in the region. After the liberation of Lika, the Croats returned to Velebit. Most of Velebit’s inhabitants lived in the mountains during the warmer months to hunt, etc. No major archaeological research has been carried out in this area.

Hajducki kukovi and Razanski kuvoki have been designated as nature reserves because of the geomorphical phenomena here and there are over 150 pits. These pits are karst holes. A karst is a vertical hollow formed by tectonics and water. Karst holes were considered to have supernatural powers and also used as a source of water.
Lukina cave is one such karst hole with a depth of 1392 meters and it is the world’s eighth deepest cave. The world’s deepest hole is also in this National Park and was discovered in August 2004 by a group of Croatian cavers led by a man called Darko Baksic. The hole has a depth of 1693 foot or 516 meters. A couple of the Cerovac caves are open to the public, which contain many stalactites and caverns.

Visitors to the Velebit can follow the fifty-kilometer long Premuzic path. This path was created between 1930 and 1933, and named after the constructor Anto Premuzic. This path follows the Velebit ridge through a variety of local flora and gives a chance of seeing bears and golden eagles.

Make sure you include a visit to Velebit Botanical garden on Zavizan in Modric dolac. This is the only alpine botanical garden in Croatia and contains around 500 wild Velebit plants. The garden has recently been renovated since the death of the creator Professor Kusan.
