Croatia Biokovo Nature Park Travel Tourism Guide - Biokovo or Sveti Jure is the largest and highest mountain in the Dalmatia Range. The mountain rises vertically from the Adriatic coast to a height of 1762 meters. The park is in the hinterland of the Makarska Riviera and was designated as a Nature Park in 1981. The geomorphic massif covers 196 square kilometers.

Biokovo Nature Park has a continental and Mediterranean climate because of its location. The park consists of beech, fir and pine forests, with Dalmatian black pine on the coastal side of the park and silver fir trees on the hinterland edge.

There are lots of caves (approx 350), funnel shaped holes and pits in the limestone formations within the nature park. There is an educative geological path that has been opened at Pod Vilovik where you can view the karst features and the learning trail has information boards explaining the local phenomena. There are 25 endemic animal species within the caves, and plenty of paleontological and archaeological remains too.

Biokovo Botanical Garden is above the village of Kotisina and was established in 1984. It is a horticultural monument of 16.5 hectares, and is an important site for nature conservation and protection of the Biokovo plant life. The botanical garden was established by Friar Jure Radic and founded by the Makarska Municipal Assembly. The garden has over 1200 plant taxons and there is a guidebook available.
You can reach the summit of Sveti Jure by car but you need to pay a toll on the road. The peak is slightly marred by a TV tower. From the summit of Sveti Jure you can enjoy extensive views of all the Dalmatian islands. King Friedrich Auguster II climbed this peak in 1838. There is a Biokova mountain trail available with 20 control points.

There is a variety of wildlife in the park. You can find over 30 species of amphibians and reptiles. Chamois and Mouflon were released here in 1964. You might glimpse a sight of the golden, grey or snake eagle. Choughs are a common sight on the mountain cliffs and the Biokova partridge is an attractive prey for hunters. There are several endemic plants growing in the park such as the Biokova bellflower.
