Croatia Medvednica Nature Park Travel Tourism Guide - The Veternica cave was populated in the prehistoric times and there have been plenty of remains found to support this. Veternica is one of the largest caves in Croatia and lots of fossil remains of animals have been found including the aurochs.

The cave has been protected as a geomorphical monument since 1979; it also contains stalagmites and stalactites. The area was first mentioned in historical documents in 1209. Salt used to be excavated in the area during the fourteenth century and possibly coal. Silver was also extracted in the sixteenth century.

There are remains of a health sanatorium, which was used to treat tuberculosis but was closed down in 1986 due to new technology. You may wish to visit the medieval fortification of Medvedgrad, built in the thirteenth century, which has not been renovated, and also the Homeland altar which is dedicated to the Croats who died for Croatia. The castle Gornja Stubica has become the Museum of the Peasants’ Revolt. The first hiking monument was erected in 1870, which is a wooden pyramid.

Medvednica Nature Park is situated north of Zagreb and it is the major recreational area around the city. The nature park was founded on June the 16th in 1981 and has a size of 22.826 hectares. Sixty three percent of the park consists of forest. The forests are comprised of the common oak, the sessile oak, beech, and fir. Sopot waterfall, a karst phenomenon is in the nature park.
The highest peak within the nature park is Sljeme, which is at a height of 1,032 meters, and the range is comprised of green slate. The peak can be reached by car, cable car or on foot. There is plenty of hiking and walking trails in the nature park as well as the best equipped skiing center in Croatia. If you prefer cycling, there are 110 kilometers of cycling trails to explore. If you like bats, there is an adopt a bat programme available for nature lovers.

Guided tours are available for the Veternica cave and the Trinski mine is also open to visitors. There are also 4 trails available, 1 designed for children, 1 for people with special needs, 1 educational and 1 geological. Excursions that last either for a whole day or half day can be found. Motor vehicles need to pay to enter the park.
