Croatia Vransko Jezero Nature Park Travel Tourism Guide - Vransko Lake is the largest lake within Croatia and it is situated with the region of Ravni-Kotar, northeast of Pakostane. The nature park covers fifty seven square kilometers of marshes and water. The nature park is also a special orthnological nature reserve. The area in ancient times used to be called 'vedro blato' , it was inhabited by the Illyrian tribes, and this is confirmed by archaeological evidence. The Romans built an aqueduct to send the water from here to supply the town of Zadar. A medieval Benedictine fortress was built in this area and the Croatian Sabor assembly met here in this building. The templar knights later owned the fortress.

 

Remnants of the Turks are still visible with the Turski Inn just outside the nature park. The area was proclaimed as a nature park in 1999 and the reedy part of the lake was designated as an orthnological reserve in 1983. It is on the list of Important Bird Reserves in Europe.

The Vransko Jezero Nature Park is one of Croatia's ten nature parks. Some of the birds that can be seen here include egrets, cackling cuckoo, wild ducks, and grebes. The area is abundant in natural water springs. The lake actually covers an area of thirty square kilometers and has a depth of between 2 and 5 meters.

 

The lake is a karst feature, filled with water and there are several underground crevices, which connect it to the sea because of this, the water may appear brackish at times. 204 different species of birds may be seen in the park and 102 of these nest inside. Four of these are endangered species, the pygmy cormorant, the bittern, purple heron, and jack snipe. Many different dragonflies and butterflies can be found here. There are numerous fish within the lake such as carp and eel, and this offers excellent fishing opportunities.

 

If you like camping there is a campsite within the park called Cikvine. For walkers and cyclists there is a thirty kilometers cycling trail around the lake. If you have an interest in ecology there are ecological workshops held here that are available to book.
