The earliest known inhabitants of this region were from the Stone Age. There are also remains from the Roman times and medieval fortresses such as the Tuscak fortress and Old Town Tumberak fortress. The Jazovka karst pit near Sosice is a mass grave for World War II victims.

There are a number of underground streams, abysses, and caves within the park. The area is mainly rural with most inhabitants working in the farming industry. The territory falls between the Dinaric plateau and the Inner Dinaricdes area.

There are two mountains ranges, the Zumberak Mountains where the highest peak in this range is Sveta Gera, which is at a height of 1178 meters, and the Samobor mountains with Japetic at 971 meters and Mount Plesivica at 780 meters. There are a number of alpine and karst features within this relief, the karst features are in ninety per cent of the park.
The park contains some fascinating waterfalls such as the Sopot waterfall, which falls for 40 meters beside a mill and the Cerlinski Vir. There is also 337 recorded natural springs within the park to date.

The area is popular with tourists for angling, hunting, hiking, cycling, and mountaineering. There are plenty of walking opportunities with forty kilometers of marked walking trails and two hundred kilometers of marked cycling routes. Near the summit of Sveta Gera, a military complex was built by the Yugoslav people’s army and has caused much dispute between Croatia and Slavonia. There is also a chapel well worth viewing upon Sveta Gera called St. Ilija. You may like to visit the ethnographic house near the Okic fortress and the Bazilian sisters monastery also holds an ethnographic collection.
